Personal resources refer to all resources that exist internal to an individual that can assist in performing an objective. Core to many of the personal resources commonly studied across organizations are cognitions that are primarily evaluated through report data. A significant portion of research has focused on a set of traits associated with hope, efficacy, resilience, and optimism which positively predict well-being, learning, and performance. These traits heavily involve cognitive elements that measure corresponding behavioural, and emotional expressions linked to outcomes associated with a phenomenon. For example, viewing a stressor as a challenge instead of a hinderance can produce opportunities for growth related to a positive perspective on a future-orientation linked to optimism. A major personal resource related to uncovering intersecting factors that explain increased work engagement, job performance and employee satisfaction is psychological capital (PsyCAP). This is important since you might not be familiar with the literature exploring workplace factors associated with perception. A defining characteristic of PsyCAP is that it refers to a set of perceptions forming mindsets that are interrelated to behaviours branching into traits of hope, efficacy, resilience, and optimism. Factors involving positive mental, and physical health reports related to reduced symptoms of burnout have also been implicated in the development of PsyCAP. By understanding the role of perception, it becomes clearer to identify the pathways that produce greater thriving in life through what one does for work...

Personal Resources

Personal resources can further be sorted into separate variables related to various dimensions of an individual’s mental and physical abilities, such as strategies, beliefs, motivations, and behaviours aiding an individual to complete a demand. A common model implemented to study workplace behaviour frequently related to well-being and performance is the job demands resource model (JD-R). The JD-R model organizes variables into resources comparing job demands with individuals accessing resources in meeting a demand. Demands are associated with performance, stress, and well-being. A large portion of decisions made to utilize personal resources occurs by the moderating factors existing in relation to perceptions. Perceiving demands or the resources one can rely on in accomplishing a work demand impacts the degree of perceived stress having psychological and physiological impacts on the body over time. This influence has been related to burnout, job satisfaction, and employee performance, it can even impact general well-being inside and outside of the workplace. When individuals perceive high work demands and the manner of going about addressing a workload, individuals who hold perceptions associated with PsyCAP tend to report higher well-being and performance. This is sustained even when stress is perceived as high. However, some perceptions can moderate the relationship altering the direction of an effect, or its magnitude. Individuals may for other reasons score high on PsyCAP, perceive high work demands and stress, but experience different outcomes as a result of moderators. Various situations for instance may interact with an individual’s perceptions such as when working in teams or groups where support can off-load demands reducing one’s perceived responsibilities and workload...

Perceptions

How an individual perceives the self, others, and the work environment influences behaviours and cognitions in subtle, and meaningful ways. An individual who perceives difficulties as enhancing one’s ability or experience in positive and productive ways is more likely to address a work difficulty as an obstacle that one can adapt around instead of a hassle contributing to a lack of motivation, effort, and negative well-being. Individual’s attributions of a situation at work can impact directly the variables which currently help explain links throughout organizations between high performance and high well-being among the employees. How an individual perceives working with colleagues can potentially moderate an employee’s willingness to draw upon personal resources toward completing a work demand. Individuals who are motivated intrinsically may find support from team members to be beneficial in addressing workloads when demands are high. When demands are low, an individual may not perceive any support from teams directly related to the job as the need for help is reduced. Yet, the effects of teams that support individuals by reducing workloads, including leaders who influence teams have been studied less than other levels of analysis when exploring moderators in the relationship between personal resources, performance, and well-being...

Psychological Capital

Numerous studies improving the reliability of research on personal resources frequently finding positive relationships between PsyCAP, performance, and well-being that exists under various conditions exploring in parallel to the JD-R model. PsyCAP is composed of four factors that positively predict well-being commonly measured by positive psychologists. PsyCAP is associated with intrinsic motivations related to the assistance a resource implicated in JD-R provides. Intrinsic motivations are internal, addressing deeper psychological needs of autonomy, competence, and connectedness. Parallels between the PsyCAP collection of interrelated traits HERO are linked to models exploring intrinsic and extrinsic motivations assessing variables of autonomy, competence, and connectedness that influence an employee’s satisfaction with work, job performance, and other perceptions. This implicates the role of cognition as a factor altering the willingness of an individual to meet an objective related to a job demand that satisfies a psychological need. Employees whose needs are met engage actively in a set of prior events where work roles are learned along with, demands, and what to expect informing later decision-making related to productivity, satisfaction in the workplace, and taking pride in where one is employed...

Conclusion

Personal resources supporting an employee’s ability to address work demands, as well as regulate stress and emotions related to well-being commonly pertaining to internal processes involving perceptions. Perceptions are important to understanding how personal resources generally fuel individual performance related to a demand which can be moderated by situational variables such as teams that have received less research attention. This is essential, as psychological capital involving HERO pertains primarily to individual traits that intersect with other factors not exhaustively explored. Developing a better understanding of the role of perception is therefore a valuable exploration of study with practical applications investigating the role of perception heavily involved in the moderation of human flourishing related to the workplace...
